A Birch Grove in Croatia

By Sun Xiaoya

Afterwards

Through the birch grove she conversed with him

Only he could hear voices

adrift on the wind

A pall of gunpowder smoke

settled over verdant trees

Now and then a fellow fighter

would awaken

And give him a familiar smile

Drawing a breath of battle

smoke from twenty years ago

Many fellow fighters rest beneath

the humus of that grove

A fertile quilt keeps them from

harsh weather

From tears of loved ones

And memories that

can’t be rubbed away

Stars are emanations of

their presence

Imparting warmth to hearts

and restless souls

He comes here, only for the quiet

Leading her by the hand

Pine boughs moist with rain

and scent

Are responsive to his mood

Companions nearby

capture moments of beauty

The touch of plants and poems

of an exotic place

She allows her hand to be

grasped firmly in his

Which instantly conveys to her

Sorrowful memories buried

for two decades

Listen to remarks

he shares with them

An intersection of doubled lives

It is a collision of

branch with branch

Voices shaken down from

the sky after rain

Only one man

lived through this battle

He takes the long route,

past this place

Sunlight beaming

into dark hollows

and grief-stricken silence

Falls upon on cheeks, silhouettes, inscriptions on glass

A sleep-talker’s voice tells its windborne tale

Of a statue’s silence

long ago turned solid

A quickly passing day

At Plitvice Lakes

—in Croatia
